진주 남강의 아름다운 가을밤

진주 혼, 진주의 정신이 만든 축제

진주 남강에 등을 띄우는 유등 행사는 임진왜란 3대첩의 하나인 진주대첩에 기원을 두고 있다. 진주목사 김시민 장군을 비롯한 3,800여명의 수성군과 진주성을 침공한 2만 여명의 왜군이 벌인 제1차 진주성전투는 무려 10일간 이어졌다. 치열한 공방이 오가는 가운데 진주성 수성군이 칠흙같이 어두운 밤에 남강에 유등을 띄워, 남강을 건너려는 왜군을 저지하는 군사전술로, 한편으로는 성 밖의 가족들에게 안부를 전하는 통신수단으로 사용했다. 후일, 진주 사람들은 국난 극복에 몸을 바친 순국선열들의 넋을 위로하기 위해 남강에 유등을 띄웠고, 이 전통이 면면히 이어져 대한민국 글로벌축제인 진주남강유등축제로 자리잡았다.

올해 태풍 콩레이의 영향으로 5, 6일 이틀간 휴장됐던 진주남강유등축제는 7일부터 다시 재개하였으며, 많은 관람객들이 다시 축제현장을 찾았다. 태풍이 몰고온 집중호우로 인해 축제장인 남강 둔치는 한 때 침수 피해가 발생하기도 했지만 상인들과 진주시, 축제관계자 외 많은 진주 내 봉사단체들이 현장을 빠르게 복구하면서 정상운영이 빨리 진행되었다. 이로 인해 방문한 관람객들이 큰 불편없이 축제를 즐길 수 있었다.

갑작스레 다가온 태풍에서 그 수많은 등을 안전하게 지켜낸 것도 진주의 정신이지 않을까라는 생각이 든다.

Festival made of spirit of Jinju Yudeung event floating lanterns on Namgang of Jinju originated from the Jinjuseong battle which is one of 3 grand battle during the 16th century
Japanese Invasion of Korea. The 1st battle of Jinju that the governor of Jinju, general Kim Simin & 3,800 soldiers who defended the Jinjuseong Fortress and about 20,000 Japanese military who invaded Jinjuseong Fortress fought
continued for 10 days. In this battle, the soldiers of Jinjuseong Fortress used the lanterns they floated on Namgang as a military tactic to interrupt Japanese military trying to cross Namgang and a means of communication to send regard to the family out of fortress. Later, people of Jinju floated
lanterns on Namgang to comfort the spirits of marytrs who dedicated themselves to overcoming a national crisis. This tradition has been going on and became a global festival of Korea, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival.
This year, Jinju Namgang Festival was stopped for 2 days, from 5th and 6th due to the influence of typhoon, Kong-rey but reopened on 7th and a lot of tourists visited the festival again. There was a flood damage in the waterfront
of Namgang temporarily because of heavy rain the typhoon brought but merchants, organizers of festival and many volunteers restoring the place, the festival was resumed normally soon. Therefore, lots of tourists could enjoy the festival without any great inconvenience. To protect a number of lanterns floating on Namgang safe also seemed like the spirit of Jinju.
