사라 씨, 안녕하세요. 인터뷰에 응해주셔서 감사합니다. 이집트에 여행 온 기분이 어떠신가요? 같은 곳에 방문했어도 경험했던 것들이 달라서 궁금하네요.
Sarah thank you for taking the time for a short interview. How did you feel as a world traveler in Egypt? Because it is inevitable that we compare our experiences with each other.
이집트는 제가 방문했던 가장 좋은 나라 중 하나입니다. 제 여행은 여기서 끝나지 않아요. 집에 돌아가더라도 어떻게든 돌아오고 싶은 곳입니다. 역사의 바람과 옛 이집트 탐험가들이 저를 감동시킵니다. 피라미드 안을 걷고 있으면 고고학자가 되고 싶을 거에요. 홍해에 빠져있다면, 해양생물학자에 관심을 갖겠죠. 이곳은 정말 영감을 주는 곳이에요.
One of the best countries I have ever been to. The journey is never over here. If you go home, you want to come back somehow. It touches the wind of history and old Egyptian explorers here. If you’re walking among the pyramids, you’re sure to want to be an archaeologist, if you’re immersed in the Red Sea, you’ll definitely be interested in the marine biologist career. This place is a real inspiration.

What was your best experience here?
저는 이집트가 싫증나지 않아서 좋아요. 매번 새로운 것을 발견합니다. 이 모든 발견은 여러분에게 또 다른 압도적인 경험을 선사합니다. 여기선 모든 것이 풍족하게 느껴져요. 색깔, 사람들의 친절함, 가능성. 너무 많아 완전 어지러울걸요? 가볼 곳은 또 얼마나 많은지. 반 년도 모자라요. 나일강 유람선에 탑승하거나 낙타와 말을 타고 피라미드를 돌아다닐 수 있고, 이집트의 대부분이 사막이기 때문에 사막 사파리를 타고 캠핑과 바비큐 여행을 즐길 수도 있죠. 여기서 뭐든지 할 수 있어요. 그렇지만 아마 도시와 사막의 대조된 풍경이 저에게 가장 큰 영향을 줍니다.
I love Egypt because I can’t get enough of it. There is always something to discover. And every discovery gives you another overwhelming experience. It's all an exaggeration here. Colors, kindness of people, possibilities. You get completely dizzy. Places there are to visit are countless. Even half year not enough here. You can go on a Nile cruise, you can ride camels and horses around the pyramids, and because most of Egypt is desert, you can go on desert safaris, and have a nice camping and barbequing trip. You can do anything here. Perhaps the contrast between the city and the desert. This made the biggest impact on me.

And the strangest?
이곳에는 한국처럼 쓰레기 처리 차량이 없어요. 그래서 집집마다 지붕에 쌓아둔 쓰레기 더미를 봐도 놀라지 마세요. 이곳은 대도시의 풍경과 차원이 다르답니다.
There is no garbage truck like in Korea, so don’t be surprised to see your garbage accumulating on the roofs of houses. Here the view is very different from other big cities.
이집트에서 가장 좋아하는 장소는 어디인가요?
What is your favorite place in Egypt?
다합! 특히 젊은이들에게 휴식과 친목을 위한 진정한 장소입니다. 사람들은 환상적이고 세계 각지에서 이곳으로 다이빙하러 옵니다. 정말 다양한 문화가 혼합된 분위기를 느낄 수 있어요.
Dahab! A real place for relaxation and acquaintance, especially for the younger generations. The people are fantastic and come here from all over the world to dive. A real multicultural medium in an Egyptian atmosphere.
이집트 사람들은 여행자들에게 친절한가요?
What do you think about the people of Egypt? How hospitable nation? How friendly and helpful with travelers?
저는 많은 나라를 여행했습니다. 어디에서나 친절하고 우호적인 사람들을 만났지만, 이집트 사람들의 환대, 유머 감각, 그리고 일반적으로 재밌는 것을 사랑하는 정신에 필적할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.
I have traveled to many different countries. While I have found people everywhere to be friendly and gracious, nothing can match the hospitality, sense of humor and generally fun-loving spirit of the Egyptian people.
이집트 여행은 언제 떠나는 게 가장 좋을까요?
What is the best time to travel to Egypt?
언제든지 와도 좋아요. 여름에는 따뜻하지만, 한국인들은 이것에 익숙하죠. 9월에는 기온도 낮아지고 관광객 수도 줄어들 거에요. 편하게 여행하고 싶은 사람들에게는 이때가 나쁘지 않겠죠.
You could always come. The summer months are warm, but Koreans are used to it. Around September, the temperature and the number of tourists will also decrease. For those who want to travel comfortably, this is not a bad time.
이집트는 여행하기 안전한가요?
What do you think of safety issues in the city?
이집트는 ‘깨어있는’ 나라입니다. 사람들은 관광객들에게 익숙해요. 하지만 신중하게 옷을 입고, 사람들을 존중하는 말을 하는 것이 중요합니다. 종교적 특수성을 존중하는 것이죠. 군중을 피하고 멀리 시위가 일어나는 것이 보인다면 피하세요! 이게 정말 중요해요! 거기서 무슨 일이든 일어날 수 있어요. 아무도 당신을 보호할 수 없습니다. 또한, 가난한 사람들이 많은 만큼 구걸하는 사람도 많아요. 그들에게 돈을 준다면 훨씬 더 많은 사람들이 따라붙을 거에요. 돈을 주는 건 좋은 방법이 아니겠죠? 제가 말한 것들을 지킨다면 여러분은 멋진 여행을 할 수 있을 거예요. 라마단 기간에 오면 열려있는 가게가 없을 것을 대비하고, 저녁에는 길거리에서도 모르는 가족이 음식을 나눠줍니다.
It is an enlightened country. People are used to tourists. But it’s important to dress discreetly, talk to people with respect. Respect religious peculiarities. Avoid the crowd and avoid the protests far away!!! This is very important! Anything can happen there. No one can protect you. There are many poor people, so there are many beggars. If you give them money there will be even more. They will follow. Not a good way. If you follow these, you will have a wonderful journey. If you come during Ramadan, be prepared that there will be no open shop, but in the evening, even on the street, unknown families will provide food on the street.
이집트에 방문하는 한국 여행자들에게 해줄 조언이 있나요?
What advice can you share for those Korean people who wants to travel to Egypt?
물티슈를 많이 가져오세요. 한국인이 기대하는 위생은 바라지 않는 게 좋아요. 익숙해지기 정말 어려운 일인데, 특히 우리가 여유롭지 않은 환경에서 여행하며 현지인들과 어울린다면 더더욱 그렇죠.
현지 가이드를 고용하세요. 값이 싸기도 하고, 그들은 가이드로 생계를 유지하는데 이것은 특히 시골에서 쉽지 않은 일이에요. 혼자서는 절대 가볼 수 없는 곳으로 데려가기도 하고, 대가족 만찬을 제공하는 경우도 있어요.
고양이 간식을 항상 챙겨 다니세요. 길에 돌아다니는 아기 고양이들의 건강이 상당히 좋지 않아요. 하지만 몸집이 큰 개들은 피하세요. 사회성이 매우 떨어져서 위험할 수 있어요.
가장 중요한 것은 빈 여행가방을 가지고 오세요! 이곳에서 많은 보물을 찾을 수 있어서 짐을 쌀 공간이 충분하지 않을 거에요.
Bring hand tissues a lot. Hygiene is not comparable to Korean needs. This will be very difficult to get used to. Especially if we travel in non-luxurious conditions and mingle with the locals.
Hire local guides. They are cheap, informed and help you make a living, which is not easy, especially in the countryside. They take you to places you would never see anyway and many times the trip ends with a big family dinner.
Always bring some cat snack. The kittens are in pretty bad shape. But the bigger dogs are worth avoiding, they are very poorly socialized.
But the most important: Come with an empty suitcase! You will find so many treasures here that there will not be enough space to pack.

„The City of a Thousand Minarets” is the capital of Egypt and with a total population in excess of 16 million people, one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East. Though firmly attached to the past, Cairo is also home to a vibrant modern society.
이집트 박물관 Egyptian Museum
이집트 박물관은 카이로를 넘어 이집트 최대의 박물관으로 꼽힌다. 투탕카멘의 황금관을 비롯한 각종 국보급 보물이 전시된 것으로 유명하다. 카이로의 대표 관광 명소 중 하나이며, 전 세계에서 몰려든 방문객으로 늘 붐빈다. 소장 자료만 약 10만 점에 다다르는 것으로 알려졌다. 5,300~3,500년 전 유물도 만나볼 수 있다. 전시품을 천천히 둘러보는데 적어도 하루 이상이 걸린다.
The Egyptian Museum is considered Egypt's largest museum beyond Cairo. It is famous for displaying various national treasure-grade treasures, including Tutankhamun's golden crown. It is one of Cairo's most popular tourist attractions and is always crowded with visitors from all over the world. It is heard that the collection alone has about 100,000 copies. You can also see relics dating back 5,300 to 3,500 years. It takes at least a day to look around the exhibits slowly.
기자 지구 피라미드 Great Pyramids of Giza
카이로 외곽의 바깥쪽에 있는 기자 지구에 위치한 관광지이다. 이 거대한 구조물을 바라보면 왜소하다는 느낌을 피할 방법이 없다.

룩소르 신전 & 왕들의 계곡 Luxor's Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings
룩소르는 신왕국의 권력 기반이자 고대 도시 ‘테베’가 있던 곳이다. 이곳은 한번에 그치기 보다 여러 번 방문했을 때 더 많은 광경을 목격할 수 있다. 이곳에서 며칠 동안 무덤의 화려한 벽화를 감상하고 사원의 거대한 기둥을 경외하며 바라보면 룩소르가 역사학자들과 고고학자들을 매료시키는 이유를 알 수 있을 것이다.
This is ancient Thebes, power base of the New Kingdom pharaohs, and home to more sights than most can see on one visit. Spend a few days here exploring the colorful wall art of the tombs and gazing in awe at the colossal columns in the temples, and you'll see why Luxor continues to fascinate historians and archaeologists.
화이트데저트 White Desert
이곳에는 눈이 부시도록 하얀 바위와 빙산처럼 생긴 뾰족한 바위가 가득해, 마치 공상과학 영화에나 나올 것 같은 풍경이다. 사막 마니아들과 모험가들에게 이곳은 절대적으로 매력적인 곳이며, 사원과 무덤을 잔뜩 본 사람이라도 주변의 화려한 자연 경관을 즐길 수 있다.
The landscapes here look like something out of a science fiction movie, with blindingly white boulders and iceberg-like pinnacles. For desert fans and adventurers, this is the ultimate weird playground, while anybody who's had their fill of temples and tombs will enjoy this spectacular natural scenery.
알렉산드리아 Alexandria
알렉산더 대왕이 발견했고, 클레오파트라의 고향이며, 알렉산더 대왕과 지중해의 요란한 배신자가 여생을 보냈던 곳이다. 이 해변 도시는 하루하루 더해갈수록 즐거운 매력적인 분위기를 가지고 있다.
Founded by Alexander the Great, home of Cleopatra, and razzmatazz renegade city of the Mediterranean for much of its life, this seaside city has an appealing days-gone-by atmosphere that can't be beaten.
사카라 Saqqara
카이로에서 당일치기로 방문할 수 있는 사카라는 옛날 파라오 왕국의 거대한 공동묘지다. 고대 이집트인들이 건축 지식을 발전시켜 계단식 피라미드, 굴절형 피라미드, 붉은 피라미드 등 어떻게 끝내 진정한 피라미드를 만들어냈는지를 보여준다.
Day-tripping from Cairo, Saqqara is the vast necropolis of the Old Kingdom pharaohs and showcases how the Ancient Egyptians advanced their architectural knowledge to finally create a true pyramid with the Step Pyramid, Bent Pyramid, and Red Pyramid being among the highlights here.

아부 심벨 신전 Abu-Simbel Temples
사원이 즐비한 이집트에서도 아부 심벨 신전은 특별한 존재이다. 이곳은 람세스 2세의 위대한 사원으로, 바깥에 거대한 성소가 세워져 있고, 내부는 벽화로 화려하게 장식돼 있다.
Even in a country festooned with temples, Abu Simbel is something special. This is Ramses II's great temple, adorned with colossal statuary standing guard outside, and with an interior sumptuously decorated with wall paintings.

다합은 이집트에서 가장 사랑받는 여행지 중 하나로, 시원하고 느긋한 분위기에서 멋진 스쿠버다이빙을 즐길 수 있는 멋진 여행지이다. 배낭여행 커뮤니티에서 인기가 높으며, 남쪽으로 80km 떨어진 압도적인 관광지인 샤름 엘 셰이크와 대조적으로 편안한 분위기를 이룬다.
Dahab is one of Egypt's best-loved destinations, a wonderful mixture of great scuba diving in a chilled and laid-back atmosphere, popular with the backpacking community and a relaxed contrast to the overwhelmingly touristy Sharm El Sheikh, 80km to the south.

Cruising the Nile is also the most relaxing way to see the temples that stud the banks of the river on the route between Luxor and Aswan, plus sunrise and sunset over the date-palm-studded river banks, backed by sand dunes, is one of Egypt's most tranquil vistas.
홍해에서 스쿠버 다이빙 Scuba diving in the Red Sea
이집트는 반세기 이상 스쿠버 다이버들이 즐겨 찾은 곳인데, 특히 이집트 동부 해안 전체를 따라 흐르는 홍해에 쉽게 접근할 수 있기 때문이다. 그중에서 다합을 가장 추천한다.
Egypt has been a favourite of scuba divers for the better part of half a century, especially with its easy accessibility to the Red Sea, which runs along the entirety of Egypt's eastern coastline. My favourite is Dahab’s area.
이집트 분위기 즐기기 Enjoy Egypt spiritual side
이슬람 카이로 지역의 분위기, 좁은 차선은 모스크와 마드라사로 가득 차 있다. 알 아자르 모스크와 눈부신 술탄 하산 모스크, 그리고 무엇보다 중세 시대의 성문인 ‘주웨일라 문’의 첨탑에 올라가보자. 이곳에서 이슬람 지구를 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있다.
The atmospheric, narrow lanes of the capital's Islamic Cairo district are crammed full of mosques, madrassas. Visit Al-Azhar Mosque and the dazzling Sultan Hassan Mosque, and make sure you climb to the roof of the ancient medieval gate of Bab Zuweila for the best minaret-speckled panoramas across the district.
